A good user experience is fundamental to any successful web campaign. It’s all very well and good getting people to your website with a great ad campaign, but if you want them to take action, you’ll need to make sure your website is a joy to use. That’s why we’ve put some top UX tips together to help you get that conversion.
There’s nothing worse than a pop-up with no clear way to close it, or a form with overly quirky button text, so make sure your buttons give clear and simple instructions. If you’re asking a question, the options should be ‘yes’ or ‘no’, and if you’re asking someone to submit a form, make it easy with a ‘submit’ or ‘send’ button.
If you’re asking someone to sign up to your newsletter, or giving them the chance to download a whitepaper, chances are you don’t need to know what their salary range is, how many people are in their team and what their dog’s name is.
Keep it simple and only ask for the information you really need – usually their name, email address and company. The less information someone needs to give, the more likely it is that they’ll fill out the form.
When someone’s sent a form to you, they probably want to know that it’s worked, so give helpful feedback when people take actions on the website. If they submit a contact form to request support, consider adding a message that tells them how long it will be until they get a response – either on screen or by email. Email confirmations can be particularly helpful, as they ensure that the person has definitely put in the right details.
There’s a reason that the play button is ubiquitous between your TV remote, your Spotify app and the DVD menu – it’s commonly recognised all over the world. So, when it comes to signposting things like search bars or logging into a user account on your website, try and avoid being overly different and instead, use simple iconography that visitors are likely to recognise.
There’s nothing to say you can’t add a bit of personality through the style of icon you choose, but it should be recognisable and easy to spot.
